Cross Country
Learn the elegant art of the kick and glide or the power moves of skating. Cross country skiing is the perfect way to explore the back country whilst improving your fitness level. Technique is the key and a lesson in either skating or striding will set you on the right path.

Back Country
Escape the crowds with a backcountry tour, rip turns through the untouched chutes and take in the awe-inspiring views. It couldn't be sweeter, just you, the mountain and miles of pristine terrain to sink your sleds into. Alpine touring skis and skins are available from Thredbo Sports. Snowboards can also be used on these trips with snowshoes to get around.

Tours to Dead Horse Gap, the Ramshead Range, and a full day trip to Mt Kosciuszko are on offer.

Full day $610, half day $345, 1 hour $139

Tips for leaving the groomed trails

1. Travel with at least 2 other people
2. Tell someone reliable where you are going and when you'll be back - and let them know when you return
3. Check the weather conditions before you set out - change your plans if bad weather is approaching
4. For overnight trips carry a mountain tent - do not rely on huts or snow caves for shelter
5. Carry a bivvy bag on day trips
6. Take and know how to use a topographical map and compass - even if you have a GPS
7. Keep your GPS and spare batteries warm at all times
8. Consider buying or hiring an EPIRB - mobile phone coverage is patchy
