Dead Horse Gap Tour

Duration: 3 hour, half day tour
Rider Level: Upper intermediate to advanced skiers. Advanced snowboarders only capable of dealing with flatter sections and tight trees

Get a taste of Australia’s beautiful backcountry with maximum downhill riding on this half day tour. Be guided through the iconic snowgums of Dead Horse Gap and told about the history of the area. Learn basic backcountry safety and cruise down to a Range Rover that will take you back to Thredbo. This short adventure will show you why the backcountry is the place to be for stunning scenes, quiet nature and great skiing.

What You Need To Know:

  • Meeting at 9.15am from the large trail maps at Valley Terminal.
  • Max 2 participants.
  • Complimentary Backcountry Access Pass
  • Guided tour through Dead Horse Gap
  • Range Rover pickup from Cascades Car Park and return drive to Thredbo resort.
  • The North Face ‘Backcountry Pack’ containing an avalanche beacon, shovel & probe is provided for use on the tour

FAQ's

Thredbo Backcountry Tours reserve the right to cancel a tour at any time.

  • This may be due to but not limited to any of the following:
    • Lightning
    • Winds over 80km/hr
    • Extreme and continuous weather conditions: rain, hail, snow
    • Medical incident
  • All tours depart promptly. Should participants not be present and prepared at these times the tour will depart. No refunds will be given for late arrivals or no shows.
  • Weather and snow conditions dictate which tours can operate. Should conditions force the cancellation of your chosen tour alternate routes may be offered.
    • If all tours and alternates are forced to be cancelled by conditions and weather a full refund will be issued.
  • No refund will be issued if the tour is cancelled or the goal of the tour is not met during the activity. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Injury sustained to participant or guide resulting in appropriate modification to tour
    • Immediate cancellation of remainder of the tour to affect first aid and evacuation
    • Unforeseen extreme weather or conditions
  • Ski/Snowboard equipment *No need for backcountry equipment as this tour will maximum down hill riding.
  • MyThredbo Card
  • Waterproof jackt and pants
  • Layers to adjust throughout the day (thermal, mid layer, puffer layers)
  • Helmet, goggles, waterproof gloves, beanie, buff
  • Hat, sunscreen, SPF lip balm
  • 1L water
  • Have a solid breakfast and bring snacks
  • Personal medication (eg Ventolin)
  • Camera/Phone

We encourage guests to Leave No Trace and observe the Backcountry Responsibility Code:

  • Have the skills and the fitness – know your skiing/riding ability and stay in control at all times.
  • Check the weather and Alpine Hazard Report before departing
  • Have the right gear – including avalanche recue basics
  • Leave what you find – do not pick or remove anything natural
  • Dial it back and space it out
