Track Report by Alex Parsons | Guest Services Outdoor Programs Coordinator
Hiking season is in full swing with the alpine streams flowing and the first wildflowers starting to emerge. Be aware that there is still significant snow on the hiking trails, particularly around the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. If in doubt, go with a Thredbo Guide who can show you the way, keep you safe and tell you about the area’s local flora, fauna, and history.
THREDBO TO MT KOSCIUSZKO LOOKOUT
Enjoy brilliant views on the Kosciuszko Chairlift before beginning your journey through the highest mountains in Australia. The trail from Thredbo to Mt Kosciuszko Lookout is a 2km consistent uphill track that takes you over the heavily flowing Merritts Creek and through the alpine bog and fen communities where you can spot the first of the alpine wildflowers blooming.
The white and purple low-lying flowers are Alpine Marsh Marigold and you may also see some bright yellow Feldmark Buttercups too. Walk past the granite boulders of Signature Hill, over a snow drift, and up to the Kosciuszko Lookout where you can catch your first glimpse of Australia’s highest mountain.
MT KOSCIUSZKO LOOKOUT TO RAWSON PASS
On the way to Rawson Pass, there are a number of manageable snow drifts, although walking poles can help with balance.
Be sure to look into the creeks you cross over as Mountain Galaxia fish have started to emerge and sun themselves in the shallows. You may see some holes along the banks that belong to spiny crayfish, which tend to be active at night (you’re likely to see them on our Sunset and Full Moon hikes).
There are some track works in progress along this section with helicopters dropping in supplies. This can cause short delays but it is well worth it for the view of the choppers.
Take a look at Lake Cootapatamba, Australia’s highest alpine lake, on the way to Rawson Pass.
RAWSON PASS TO THE SUMMIT
Beyond Rawson Pass, there is significant snow that can be challenging to cross, with steep sections and drop-offs. Walking poles can be helpful here.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
