A beautiful time of year for exploring the mountain! The rolling alpine ridge of the Main Range is drenched in seasonal blooms and the last remaining snow drifts frame the leeward slopes.
THREDBO TO MT KOSCIUSZKO LOOKOUT TRACK WORK
Upgrades to the walking track continue from Thredbo to the Mt Kosciuszko Summit which will see the removal of dated sections and create an accessibility detour of the steps at the summit. As part of the works, helicopters will be lifting essential materials, detours will be marked out and some closures will be in place for the safety of visitors and efficiency of the operation. Please follow the direction of all signage and check for the latest updates on across the NPWS website alerts.
Track upgrades with detour between Kosciuszko Lookout and Lake Cootapatamba Lookout.
Works underway to improve the accessibility of Australia’s highest point.
Please follow all direction and signage as you walk to Mt Kosciuszko Summit.
FLORA
Anenomne Buttercup. Endemic to the alpine region, it is now a symbol of conservation as it was almost driven to extinction from grazing across the alpine.
Fields of Herbfield Celmisia or Silver Snow Daisy’s in flower along the walk to Kosciuszko Summit.
Candle Heath, a wet area flower and a wind break for ground dwelling, nesting Australasian Pipits.
FAUNA
Australasian Pipit eggshell found in the alpine near Mt Townsend in open Tall Alpine Herbfields. This bird weaves small nests, usually with 3 eggs to a clutch.
Common Eastern Froglets can often be heard in the alpine or spotted up to 2000m above sea level in seepage areas, shallow pools and wet vegetation.
