Thredbo Hikes Track Report | 23 January

Warmer temperatures and wildflowers galore make this the perfect time to hike to the summit.

THREDBO TO MT KOSCIUSZKO

Track work at the summit continues, with helicopter sling load operations occurring outside of peak times. Certain days will see the Mt Kosciuszko Summit Walk closed beyond Rawson Pass 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm. Contact the local NPWS office for more information.

There are currently stairs constructed from scaffolding giving access to the summit so prepare your legs for some extra work at the highest point. There are a number of barriers, trip hazards and construction materials around so mind your step.

FLORA

Wildflower season is still in full swing with the beautiful Highland Leek Orchid on display for those with a keen eye.

You might also spot Mueller’s Snow Gentian – this low lying herb is endemic to the Australian alpine. Look for its white flowers that have a delicate pin stripe. Mueller’s Snow Gentian is one of the last of the wildflowers to bloom every summer. Usually found in February and March, it has appeared ahead of time due to early snow melt and warmer spring temps.

FAUNA

Our endemic and endangered Bogong moths have made the migration to the mountains and are coming out in full force as the sun sets. Our sunset hikes have been swarmed by these beautiful and gentle creatures – quite a sight!

Our moths are currently undertaking aestivation – during the day they seek cool, shady spots among the granite boulders and sit quietly with their heads tucked under the wings of the moth above. At dusk they become active and fly around, making a high-pitched humming sound.

Bogong moths have a rich history, intertwined with the Traditional Custodians of the land here. They are also essential to the ecosystem and many of our endangered species like the mountain pygmy possum rely on them as a food source.
