Thredbo Development Plan

We are excited to be further developing the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park trail network over the next 5 years with a variety of new and updated trails catering to all abilities.

This 23/24 summer season, we are aiming to build a number of new sections throughout existing trails to improve the sustainability and overall ride experience. These updates are planned to be made across the Kosciuszko Flow Trail and Paparazzi. We are planning and working towards opening these for riding during the summer season in 2024, with further upgrades planned for the future.

We have lodged a development application with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment for a new accommodation sub-division in Thredbo Alpine Resort, the first land release for sub-division in three decades. The development is in line with the vision set out by the NSW Government’s Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct Master Plan, a 40-year strategic plan to bring together planning and investment whilst boosting jobs and economic activity in the region. The sub-division will utilise land identified as a suitable site for new accommodation, located at the Thredbo Golf Course.

A number of major development applications have been submitted to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment that will see substantial investment over the coming years to develop and enhance some of the most popular areas of the resort including the development of a new Merritts Mountain House.

The Southern Hemisphere’s first-ever year-round Alpine Coaster is now open! Operating 365 days a year, the new Thredbo Alpine has diversified the resort’s year-round recreational offering as an all-weather, action-packed way to experience the mountain. Passengers can control their speed of up to 40 kilometres per hour as they ride along a 1.5-kilometre track through a tunnel, bridges and circles.

Ahead of Winter 2023, Thredbo added a new pipeline snowmaking gun on Sundowner. These continual enhancements ensure Thredbo’s snowmaking fleet remains world-class and continues to improve the skiing and snowboarding experience each year.

The Snowgums Chairlift is the next lift planned to be replaced as part of our 10-Year Chairlift Development Plan.

As part of the 10-Year Chairlift Development Plan, we launched a new Easy Rider T-Bar in Winter 2022. Located in the Cruiser Terrain Park Area, the new lift has increased rider capacity by over 35%.

In Winter 2022, we officially launched Australia’s newest ski lift, Freddie’s Snowsports Snowrunner. Freddie’s Snowrunner is one of Australia’s longest snow runners at 98 metres long, travelling through a tunnel that protects children from the elements while they’re enjoying the snow.

Dedicated to the resort’s new Kids Learning Area, Freddie’s Snowrunner has been a game changer for kids who are learning how to ski or snowboard. Taking our total number of lifts to 14, Freddie’s Snowrunner adds to Thredbo’s premium snowsport lesson experience with small class sizes and highly qualified instructors. In addition to a fun ride up Friday Flat, kids are also able to interact with exciting obstacles on both sides of the tunnel while they ride down. A new office space also houses on-hand supervisor staff and provides more convenient toileting facilities for children in their lessons.

New skiers and snowboarders have been able to practice their turns on Friday Flat for longer thanks to our upgraded snowmaking facilities. In 2022, we added six new fixed snowmaking guns and four mobile snowmaking guns to the fleet. The mobile snowmaking guns significantly enhanced our ability to make snow across Friday Flat as well as across the entire resort.
