GH Mumm Race Week
Posted on 7 Aug, 2016 in Festivals & Events
What a weekend and what a race!
We kicked of G.H Mumm’s Race week at Kareela Hutte on Friday afternoon, with the Mumm Après ‘Party on the Slopes’. It was the prefect way to warm up before poolside après heated up at 4pm, with tunes from Bag Raiders (DJ Set) and plenty of G.H Mumm Champagne setting the mood for the rest of the weekend!
As we woke up to a beautiful sunrise on Saturday morning, racers were heading up to the top of Eagles Nest ready for the iconic Thredbo Top to Bottom race. Over 250 competitors clicked into their bindings and strapped onto their boards ready to battle it out down the Supertrail for bragging rights and over $20k worth of cash and prizes.
Thanks to some freezing temperatures and continuous nights of snowmaking during the week, the course was hard and fast with numerous racers clocking well over 100km/h down parts of the course.
Open Men’s ski was the main event, with some incredible racing. Harry Laidlaw took the lead early, holding it right to the bottom, followed by Frey Thomas in 2nd with Olympian Scott Kneller in 3rd . In the Open Men’s snowboard Ben Alexis swept the field for the third year in a row, with Laura Stamp taking out the women’s snowboard. Zali Offord took out Women’s ski in a dominant display of power and skill, with Alex Podgorski claiming 1st place in the amateur men’s ski category, and James Kilmartin taking the title for Veteran Men’s ski. The atmosphere at the bottom was electric, with plenty of bubbles and spectator support on offer.
The fun continued once presentations wrapped up with Kareela Hutte Après sessions that afternoon, followed up by Bag Raiders and G.H.Mumm Champagne bringing poolside to life with an electrifying set of champagne showers, confetti cannons and plenty of bubbles! To farewell the weekend it was sunshine again on Sunday again as we already begin to start the countdown until next year’s race!

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
