Thredbo | Jye Kearney
Posted on 20 Sep, 2016 in Festivals & Events
Thredbo Ambassador and Aussie snowboarding legend Jye Kearney first strapped into a snowboard on Friday Flat when he was 10 years old. Although born on the sunny Gold Coast, Jye’s love of snowboarding developed when his family moved to Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains.
From his first day on snow at Thredbo, Jye’s talent quickly developed, and by 13 he was already riding for Burton Snowboards. Come his mid to late teens and Jye was landing magazine covers, travelling winter to winter across the globe and doing something that most kids dream of – making a career out of snowboarding.
Jye is a unique rider. Burtons Brand manager, Paul Colby recalls Jye as having straight up talent right from the start, capable of tackling all terrain whether that be in the park, on the street, in the backcountry or hitting big jumps.
He is now one of the only southern hemisphere snowboarders to make a debut in an internationally recognised snowboard film, travelling through Finland, Sweden, Japan and Canada filming a segment for Method Magazine’s first snowboard movie during the 15/16 Northern Hemisphere season.
With Jye coming on board as an ambassador this year, we only saw it fitting to provide him access to the Friday Flat staircase to host one of the most progressive and innovative rail competitions to date…Jye’s Jam. The event was a huge success with 10 of the best riders from around the globe putting on a spectacle for all to enjoy.
Snowboarding has played such a huge part in Jye’s life over the last 13 years, but after all this time he still enjoys coming back home to Thredbo where he can soak up the Australian sun and have fun riding with friends in the park and scoring powder days off piste.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
