The Bluff is Back: Snow Series Freeride on the Bluff Wrap Up
Posted on 24 Aug, 2017 in Thredbo Parks
Returning in 2017 after a 4 year hiatus the Thredbo Snow Series welcomes back the Freeride on the Bluff… and what a return! The steep face of the Bluff was stacked after the Blizzard of Oz and the Blizzard of Oz 2.0. So much snow that many of the favourite features were actually filled in. With less options to choose from big air and tricks were the order of the day, as opposed to technical lines through the rocks… there’s not many rocks left up there! With one judged run to decide the winners, competitors had to negotiate the variable visibility and put it all on the line.
As the start time drew close the crew gathered at the top of the Bluff course nervously scoping their lines. We all want to win but as always the camaraderie of the Snow Series shone through with plenty of encouragement from all. As the competition progressed the action intensified. The hits kept getting bigger and the tricks kept getting more technical.
The groms and juniors impressed the onlookers fearlessly taking on drops twice their height. The snowboarders were impressive but the skiers were the stand outs on the day. Open Men Ski winner Martin Longhitano sent a huge 180 landing car park flat and stomping it before riding to the finish switch. Grom competitor Angus Falconer took out a Go Pro for his massive back flip attempt. It was as big as the open competitors but he couldn’t quite stick it… next year he will for sure. Special mention to Sam Foster the 2008 winner returning to competition and setting the tone once again with his signature stomped back flip.
Freeride on the Bluff is done and dusted leaving 2 events in the Thredbo Snow Series. Slopestyle is on September 1st and the Big Air is on September 2nd.
