Track Report by Rachael Schultz | Outdoor Operations Manager
What better way to close out the year than by experiencing the stunning beauty of Australia’s highest peaks and rolling wildflower scenes? With significant snow across the hiking trails, we recommend exploring the alpine with a Thredbo Guide who can show you the way, keep you safe and tell you about the area’s local flora, fauna, and history.
THREDBO TO MT KOSCIUSZKO LOOKOUT
From the Kosciuszko Chairlift, you’ll see lots of blooming Dusty Daisy-bush and Common Shaggy Pea that spot the hillside with their hints of white and orange-yellow. Once you reach the top of the chairlift, the trail to Mt Kosciuszko Lookout is a steady 2km incline. Take your time walking by the cool waters of Merritt’s Creek where the cushy, vibrant green disposition of the Sphagnum Moss can be spotted hugging the banks. Sphagnum Moss assists with filtering waterways, mitigates erosion and is a cosy breeding habitat for frogs.

MT KOSCIUSZKO LOOKOUT TO RAWSON PASS
Redevelopment of the elevated walking track is continuing this summer however the works just beyond the lookout are being paused over the holiday period. There are still short and scattered snow crossings remaining on the way to Rawson Pass so walking poles can be useful for balance. Take a moment to appreciate Australia’s highest lake, Lake Cootapatamba, formed by glacial activity some 30,000 years ago. To the south of the lake, the bright red Cootapatamba Hut can be seen. Its 2.5m by 2.5m construction makes it a genuine survival shelter for alpine enthusiasts in poor weather. The toilet block at Rawson’s Pass is now open however please remember that there are no places to refill water or dispose of garbage located here.

RAWSON PASS TO THE SUMMIT
There are significant snow drifts beyond Rawson Pass with steep sections and drop-offs so walking poles can help ensure a safe crossing. If you’d like the safety and security of a qualified guide, be sure to book one of our Guided Hikes.
