Track Report by Rachael Schultz | Guest Services Outdoor Operations Manager
There is no time like the New Year to hike across Australia’s ancient mountains to discover new sights and scents.
THREDBO TO MT KOSCIUSZKO
The walk to the summit is scented with the perfume of over 44 species of flora. The Alpine Stackhousia have formed mats of a sweet-scented ground cover featuring yellow star-shaped flowers, particularly around the lookout. Alpine Sundew can be spotted in wet areas with 1-flowered stem and sticky hairs on its leaves to trap and digest insects. Beyond the Bog and Fens tangled Heaths lies the Tall Alpine Herbfield community. Many proud standing Snow Daisies, Mountain Celery, Billy Buttons and Variable Eyebrights make the last push to the summit a colourful one. The walkway is now entirely clear of snow, scattered spots of snow will still feature in photos of Australia’s Highest peaks.
To beat the heat and the flies Thredbo Guided Hikes offer a Summit at Sunset.
RAMSHEAD RANGE
A short jaunt off from Thredbo is the stunning Ramshead Range. Thredbo guides will safely navigate the fragile ecology and maze of granite for a full or half-day adventure allowing hikers to explore towering tors, discover the hidden Aries Tors, scramble up North Ramshead, find caves in South Ramshead and gain cascading views into Victoria and beyond from Central Ramshead. Wildlife and wildflowers are in abundant on this off the beaten track Ramshead Hike.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to them their cultures, and Elders past, present and emerging.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
