Track Report by Lachlan Melling | Head Guide
Hiking season is upon us at Thredbo and Kosciuszko National Park is blooming.
THREDBO TO MT KOSCIUSZKO
Before starting your hike to the summit take the time to use the boot wash station provided by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services next to the summer hikes map at the top of Kosciuszko Chairlift. You can use the brush to clean the soles and sides of your shoes which helps to reduce the spread of harmful weeds and pathogens.
Keep an eye out along the walk for some of the early season blooms, the most prominent along the walk at the moment are a selection of buttercups like the Granite Buttercup and Gunn’s Alpine Buttercup. For those keen-eyed hikers, you may be able to spot the Alpine Marsh-marigold. Please follow Leave No Trace principles by only observing the flowers to allow for everyone else to enjoy.
A warmer end to winter sees less snow drifts present along the Kosciuszko Walk. One large snow drift is still hanging on as you ascend from Rawsons Pass. Please take care whilst crossing this drift.
Australia’s highest toilets are open at Rawsons Pass (5km from Thredbo). Track upgrades are approaching completion on the summit however there is a small section of rock path to be finished. Watch your step as bulk bags (used to helicopter materials in) are sitting along this section. Please use caution through here and listen to the direction of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services and workers onsite.

Thredbo sits on the traditional land of the Monero – Ngarigo people who have looked after this land, water and community for over 60,000 years. We thank them for all they have done and continue to do to look after their country, a special place which we all love and respect.
